Welcome to more Obesity Colorado

The CDC came out with the latest addition of their obesity maps. They have been tracking the percent of obese individuals by state and have visual maps going back to 1985.

As you can see in 1985, there was not as much data available for all the states, but the ones that do have data available show the highest states at 10-14%.

Jump ahead ten years to 1995 and we see data for all states and no state has less then a 10-14% obesity rate.

Bed Rest: A Real food challenge

When I was first told I would need to go on bed rest in the hospital my mind started racing. What would I do for 6 weeks, what things could I take with me, what would the hospital food be like.

The power of marketing: Ice cream

A new buzz word in food manufacturing is simple. Manufacturers have caught on to the idea that consumers want less ingredients and less processing. They want to recognize what is in their food and where it comes from.

And I have to admit I am swayed.

Bed rest: An easy commute

Young Squirrel

So I have been on three full days of bed rest so far. All in all it has not been too bad. I am learning about the most comfortable places to be at home. Where the best light is, and to situate myself to be able to get up the least amount of times during the day.

One interesting observation I have noticed is the squirrel. I am not sure if it is the same squirrel, but I like to think it is. When I am sitting in my living room I can see the telephone wire across the street. There has been a squirrel that scampers across earlier in the day. This has happened 2 days in a row. Then later in the afternoon he scampers back across the wire in the opposite direction. I am convinced that is his daily commute.

Must be nice not having to deal with traffic everyday. And from what I can see, he has a great office with lots of natural light.

It is what it is

So as of Tuesday morning (well really Monday afternoon when I spoke with my doctor) I have been instructed to go on bed rest. Although I tend to not share too much personal information on my blog, I did want to write about my experiences and this blog is a great way to do that.

I have a little bean cooking up in my personal crock pot and due to some complications need to be on bed rest for ~ 6 weeks and then hospital bed rest for another 6 weeks. #1 and I have a saying that seems to get us through any trying situations...It is what it is. So instead of worrying, fretting, obsessing and then worrying some more, I am just going with what my new reality is.

For anyone who has been on bed rest, it is not the life of luxury as one might picture. You feel somewhat helpless and useless. I can shower and get up to use the bathroom. I can also make some meals as long as I am not on my feet for long periods of time. Other than that I am instructed to lay down or sit at no more than a 45 degree angle. I cannot clean and organize my house. I cannot go grocery shopping. I cannot make dinner for my husband. I cannot do laundry or help put together the lil bean's room.

Despite all that I cannot do, I do not let that consume me. I can still work from home. I can go through the stacks of magazines sitting on my shelf waiting for their fate. I can write, check email more frequently, keep in touch with friends, and occasionally catch up with Judge Judy. Knowing that this is best for my health and the lil one and that it is a temporary inconvenience on the road to a wonderful (early) Christmas present, I am going to keep positive and remind myself of all I have to be thankful for.

Explaining Trans Fat

In my post about Tastykakes I had mentioned that I would write about trans fat. Some might already know exactly what they are, but for those who are still confused, this post is for you.

There are many different fats out there - saturated, unsaturated, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, Omega-3, Omega-6, trans fat, partially hydrogenated, hydrogenated. Some of these are actually the same thing. I am not going to get into detail about all of them. I will say that if you want to learn more about saturated fats and why they are GOOD for you, check out these posts:
